Our beliefs about education

Evolving the education system

Our education system needs to evolve to better meet the needs of today’s patrons. We need to shift from a “just-in-case” learning approach where patrons learn about topics in school "just-in-case" they may need them one day in the future to a “just-in-time” model that equips patrons with the skills to become continuous, real-time learners.

This includes developing strong abilities to discern accurate and valuable information from misinformation and unreliable sources.

Teaching real-world skills

We need to shift to a system that teaches patrons about all the available learning tools and how to use those tools effectively to learn new things while applying those lessons to practical, real-world situations that mirror what they will encounter in their day-to-day lives.

It's essential to develop critical thinkers who can identify truth and reliable information, exercising strong discernment to filter out misinformation and errors. Patrons must be equipped with communication and interpersonal skills that are vital in today's world.

This includes the ability to regulate their own emotions, collaborate effectively with others, manage complex projects and relationships, and engage in civil debate that prioritizes truth and learning over winning, conflict, or division.

Equally important is fostering a commitment to the common good and encouraging respect for diverse perspectives to prepare patrons to contribute meaningfully to our society.

Using global knowledge effectively

We now have access to the world’s collective knowledge at our fingertips and tools that enable us to learn new skills in real time, on demand, as needed. Patrons need to develop a stronger understanding of how to use these resources effectively.

At the same time, libraries must focus more on the uniquely human aspects of life that are increasingly important such as personal and relational skills, leadership, organization, critical thinking, and soft skills like confidence, creativity, grit, perseverance, and adaptability.

Discovering purpose and potential

The focus of libraries should be to help patrons understand who they are and who they are called to become. This involves guiding them to discover their unique skills, talents, and abilities and encouraging them to apply these strengths to make a meaningful impact in the areas they care about, as soon as possible.

By applying their abilities through practice and ideally receiving guidance from experienced professionals in relevant industries, patrons can develop the expertise they need to thrive.
